4 hacks for organising your home in a weekend
Forget spring cleaning, winter is the perfect time to get your house back in order
Published 07 April

Spring has earned itself a reputation as the season to organise your home, but when spring sets in and the sun is out, one of the last things you want to do is hole up in the house and clean. Winter, on the other hand, is the perfect time to stay warm indoors and turn your attention to storage solutions, minimising clutter and a mid-year tidy up.

If your home could do with an organisation overhaul, follow these simple steps this winter.

Insider tip: Now is the perfect time to get started on your winter organisation because MUJI have some amazing specials and giveaways coming up in celebration of their 1st birthday since opening in Canberra Centre. Check out all their birthday offers at the bottom of this article.

Organise your closet per season

Between summer and winter, your wardrobe changes drastically. Now that we’re in winter, retire your shorts, swimwear and sandals for now, and store them away in a box in the garage or in a vacuum bag at the top of your closet. That way you’ll make space for your big coats and jackets, plus you’ll have a much clearer vision of what to wear every day.

Hint: Most of us don’t have the wardrobe of our dreams, but that doesn’t mean you can’t vastly improve it without the need to renovate. Add extra shelves, fill up floor space with shoe racks or temporary drawers, and buy some hanging storage solutions, too. You’ll be amazed what you can fit into your wardrobe when there’s ample shelves and storage boxes to help organise everything and optimise space.

Invest in hideaway storage

It may be an investment, but a bed frame with built-in drawers can really help maximise your storage space and minimise your mess! This sleek piece of furniture from MUJI is inspired by Japan’s minimalist and clean interior style. It’s smart - both in looks and functionality. The under-bed drawers help double your storage space so you don’t need to pack so much into your dresser drawers and closet, and it also allows you the option you to do away with a set of dresser altogether to give yourself more floor space.

Designate a space for everything

Yes, even your pots and pans. When everything in your home has its own place, it’s much easier to keep things tidy. Get creative and use magazine holders or storage boxes to separate items for a cleaner look (MUJI actually have a selection of containers specifically for organising your kitchen), and consider marking them with labels so everyone in your house knows exactly where everything belongs.

Add moveable shelving

Bathroom storage is where a lot of us struggle to find enough space to house all our toiletries and linen. The easiest and most cost-effective way to fix that problem is by bringing in a shelving unit. What we love about this MUJI one is it’s moveable, it has a sleek design, and the shelves are all varying heights so you can fit all shapes and sizes of bottles and beauty products in them.
