Jonathan Zawada Mural
Aesthletics, 2021
Published 28 March

Artist Jonathan Zawada was inspired by the raw textures of the Australian natural environment.

"Without figuratively recreating those surfaces I want to evoke the feeling I get when I see the surface of rocks on the shore covered in algae, molluscs, sand and water, or the weather beaten ground of a red-earth desert.

The imagery is at once a macro environment while simultaneously an aerial view of an entire landscape. Entwined with these natural textures are the free-wheeling gestures of a human intrusion.

There is the implication of depth in relief throughout the work, as if fashioned from mud and clay, with sunlight from above revealing these undulations in depth and splashes of metallic materials that reflect a blue sky above."

About Jonathan Zawada

Known for his multi-faceted approach to the field of art and design which weave both the analogue and digital, artist Jonathan Zawada is often seeking to create tangible artefacts of transient, ephemeral virtual experiences in his work.

Centered around the intersection and blend between the artificial and the natural, Zawada's world is hyperreal - delicate and intricately detailed, as well as bold and dynamic.

Zawada’s practice is informed by his early roots in web design and coding and his further evolution into commercial graphic design, illustration, art direction and video direction and now includes object and furniture design, sculpture, video, installation and painting.

He has presented solo exhibitions of his oil paintings and installations in contemporary galleries around the world including Los Angeles, Paris, Tokyo, London, Sydney and Beijing.

Forging a strong position in working collaboratively with musical artists, Zawada has produced bodies of Aria award winning visual art and film for artists such as Flume, The Avalanches, The Presets and Dua Lipa as a few examples.

When asked to describe his practice he says, “recently I’ve simply settled on the idea that I like to make things”.
