9 Tips For Glowing Winter Skin
The skincare experts at Priceline Pharmacy share their tips for glowing winter skin.
Published 01 June

Winter skin got you down? The experts at Priceline Pharmacy weigh in on the top tips for maintaining a glowing complexion, no matter how low the mercury drops. From moisture-boosting products (on top of a tall glass of water for any dehydrated epidermis!) to brightening serums and small tweaks you can make at home read on for 9 ways to shake up your skincare routine in colder climates.

1. Layer Hydrating Products

“Cold weather can leave skin feeling dry, flaky and rough, with environmental factors such as wind and low temperatures compromising the skin’s natural barrier function,” says Priceline Beauty Advisor Gloria.

“The best way to combat this is to layer hydrating products.” Keep your skin's moisture content high by adding nourishing products to your routine and look out for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides and vitamin E, which are known for their moisturising properties.

2. Press Pause on Harsh Cleansers

Swap out gel cleansers and foaming formulas for something that won’t strip your skin of its moisture or natural oils (hot tip: look for products with the words ‘gentle’ or ‘cream’ in the name).

3. Don't slack on exfoliating

If you don’t exfoliate, all the delicious hydrating products you’re using can’t do their job properly. Just be sure to use gentle formulas that won’t cause micro-tears at your pores. Cetaphil Face Daily Exfoliating Cleanser is a great option for a non-drying, non-irritating addition to your daily routine.

When it comes to chemical exfoliants, Priceline Beauty Advisor Gloria explains the benefits of including acids in your regimen: “Chemical exfoliants break down the dry surface layer of skin and help with cellular regeneration. This also allows hydrating ingredients to penetrate further.” Neostrata Resurface Foaming Glycolic Wash contains glycolic acid, an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) that will gently slough away dead skin without the need for physical scrubbing.

4. Brighten things up with Vitamin C

A potent antioxidant, vitamin C fights free radicals which can cause sunspots, collagen breakdown and fine lines. Apply a vitamin C serum such as La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C10 Serum or Olay Luminous Niacinamide + Vitamin C Super Serum in the morning, right after cleansing but before applying SPF.

When you’ve got a little more time for pampering, try Olay Masks Vitamin C + AHA Resurfacing Peel – the two-step formula will have you on your way to glowing skin in no time as it ticks all the boxes for exfoliation and brightening in one.

5. Add a touch of turmeric

Turmeric has long been lauded for its anti-inflammatory properties. The potential benefits of this common spice include, but are not limited to, combating dullness and eczema, helping heal wounds and reducing acne scarring.

Consider adding a supplement such as Nature’s Way Activated Curcumin Turmeric Concentrate to your daily routine for inner health, or keep an eye out for turmeric in the ingredients list of your favourite Winter skincare products. Crop Natural Purifying Turmeric Mask and Andalou Naturals Brightening Turmeric + C Enlighten Serum are just two examples of the powerhouse at work.

6. Up the ante with an ultra-moisturising mask

In addition to your day-to-day routine, a hydrating mask can help dry skin hold on to moisture for longer. For instant glow, try a sheet mask such as the Clear Skincare Hyaluronic Acid Mask or Garnier SkinActive Hyaluronic Acid Watermelon Extract Ampoule Face Sheet Mask. An overnight mask is another great way to lock in moisture while you get your beauty sleep. We’re dreaming about the Swisse Polypeptide Renewing Sleep Mask and A'kin Ultra Hydrating Cream Mask for next-level hydration.

7. Lock in moisture with a hydrating face oil

Oils will help strengthen your skin’s natural moisture barrier. As the final step in your beauty routine – morning or night – press in a face oil to lock in the layers of hydration you’ve already worked so hard to achieve.

There are oils that will suit every skin type and mimic the sebum your skin already produces. Antipodes Divine Face Oil Organic Avocado Oil & Rosehip is suitable for most skin types but is particularly focused on targeting dehydrated complexions – perfect for achieving that elusive Winter glow.

8. Look after your lips

No-one likes chapped lips, but they seem like a non-negotiable when the temperature drops. That’s because the skin on our lips is thin, so it’s often the first to feel the impact of the cool, dry weather.

Nourishing lip products work to care for and repair the skin on your lips. Keep a Lano Lanostick
in your bag for hydration on the go. For a more intense treatment, use Burt's Bees Conditioning Lip Scrub to exfoliate, then apply the Burt’s Bees Lip Treatment Overnight Intensive to wake up with a soft and supple pout.

9. Don't Forget SPF!

Last but definitely not least, keep up with the factor 50. Rain, hail or shine, SPF is the most important step in your skincare routine, so apply (and reapply) sunscreen such as La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Anti-Shine Dry Touch SPF 50+ or Invisible Zinc Sheer Defence Facial Moisturiser SPF 50 daily.

“Even if the Winter sun feels less intense, it can still cause damage,” explains Priceline Beauty Advisor Gloria. “Plus, sunscreen will not only shield you from UVA and UVB rays, and some can help fight against HEV and blue light emitted by everyday devices – think laptop screens, smartphones, TVs and fluorescent lights.”
