Craft + Design Canberra Kids Workshops

The blossoms have sprung a bloom across Canberra, and Floriade is bursting with vibrant colour. These school holidays we’ve partnered with Craft + Design, to offer Canberrans a range of bespoke school holiday workshops. 

Craft + Design Canberra Kids workshops are bespoke, artist run workshops for children. In these fun workshops children will explore the theme of Regenerate through creativity and imagination, developing skills in design thinking, problem-solving and making by hand. The workshops cover a range of craft and design techniques including ceramics, construction, painting and First Nations cultural weaving.

Botanic

Botanical Brooches - Hanna Hoyne

Join artist Hannah Hoyne and make botanical forms, flowers and stars using recycled egg cartons and cereal boxes, reimagining these throw away items into unique and precious little brooches.
Hanna Hoyne creates interactive and wearable sculptures that provide playful and contemplative spaces for everyday people.

Workshop Dates: Monday 30 September 11am, 12pm, 1pm & 2pm
Wednesday 2 October 11am, 12pm, 1pm & 2pm

Woven Boxes - Dan Maginnity

Join artist Dan Maginnity and make a box woven from brown paper shopping bags. These boxes can be adapted and joined to make many different outcomes, just like natural Minecraft cubes!
Artist Dan Maginnity works on Ngunnawal | Nambri Country, working with reclaimed materials, building objects from recycled cardboard or painting murals on existent architecture. 

Workshop Dates: Sunday 6 October 11am, 12pm, 1pm, & 2pm
Monday 7 October 11am, 12pm, 1pm, & 2pm

Cultural Weaving - Jessica Spencer (Wiradjuri)

Weave a bracelet using natural fibres in vibrant colours with Wiradjuri fibre artist, Jessika Spencer.
Jessika is a First Nations weaver, writer and activist, she is a Wiradjuri woman from the Sandhills of Narrungdera, NSW


Workshop Dates: Sunday 5 October 11am, 12pm and 1pm
Friday 11 October 11am, 12pm and 1pm

Painting Cultural Artifacts - Jessica Spencer (Wiradjuri)

Join Wiradjuri artist, Jessika Spencer in a children’s painting workshop. Jessika’s Father Ross Spencer makes cultural artefacts and will be making boomerangs for each workshop participant to paint and take home with them. You’ll get to learn about Aboriginal symbols and iconography and learn how to customise your own boomerang.

Clay SeedPods – Fran Romano

Make a clay seed pod filled with real seeds to take home, put in your garden and watch the flowers grow!
Fran Romano is a Canberra-based ceramic artist. Her work is inspired by memory, history and nostalgia investigated through layering and experimenting with surface texture and photographic imagery.

Yarn Sticks - Harry’s Clarry

Let’s make a Yarn Stick together. Tell your story as you wrap with colourful yarn and weave things onto your stick. Clarrissa, a proud Kamilaroi woman is the artist behind the name Harry's Clarry. She loves creating, sewing, painting and sharing her culture.

Paper Birds - Tom Buckland

Discover the art of sculpting three-dimensional, freestanding birds using recycled cardboard with artist Tom Buckland.
Tom Buckland is an artist who works with recycled materials such as cardboard and salvaged electronics. He creates playful, interactive and experimental installation, video and performance work that invites the audience to embark on a journey of discovery.
